The ability of the family/carer to support and care for a relative with mental illness is an important part of the persons recovery. With community-based care, the carer relies on the clinical services for information and knowledge to help them understand the condition and how to manage their relative. While there is some excellent work done by clinicians, families from our culturally diverse communities are often misunderstood. Many of their cultures are different from the western pattern. They may belong to collective family societies, their concept of independence, conflict between generations, different beliefs about the cause of mental illness along with various education levels are just some of the issues we need to understand. During the years of my sons illness and my work with CALD families, it became evident that culture and values are not understood well enough in the treatment of mental illness. In my talk I will present ideas relating to how services can develop more effective communication so that CALD families can learn what to do. The catalyst for the title of this talk comes from the voices of these families. I will use the medium of story telling to explain why it is important to work in a culturally sensitive way and to explore different ways of communicating. Unfortunately there few are education programs for people with English language difficulties. My recommendations will also include effective cultural competency education for all mental health professionals, and increased education for carer/family. To enable clinicians to work effectively with our CALD consumers and their families, service providers must value the importance of prioritising this work by allocating it more time and resources. Thus, it is aimed that eventually these strategies will promote culturally sensitive therapeutic practice-beneficial to all parties involved. DEFG45mn ! ,1h.
